Angeles National Forest RV Camping: Use Acton as Your Base

Mountain drives, trails, and stargazing, with full hookups waiting at night.

June 28, 2026 · Day Trips

The Angeles National Forest covers a huge stretch of the San Gabriel Mountains above Los Angeles. It has pine forests, high peaks, waterfalls, and scenic drives. Many RVers search for Angeles National Forest RV camping, then find that most forest campgrounds are small, rustic, and not built for big rigs.

There is another way to enjoy the forest. Stay with full hookups at The Californian RV Resort in Acton, right on the forest's northern edge, and explore by day.

Why RV camping in the forest can be tricky

Most campgrounds in the Angeles National Forest are first-come or reservation sites with no hookups. Many have length limits, tight turns, and narrow roads. Some close in winter or during fire season.

If you have a large motorhome or fifth wheel, or you need power for work or medical gear, a resort base makes life easier.

Acton: the forest is next door

Acton borders the Angeles National Forest. Mountain views fill the skyline from the resort. From here, you can reach forest roads and trailheads without hauling your rig up a mountain.

Leave your RV at your site and take a smaller vehicle into the forest.

Scenic drives

Angeles Forest Highway

This road runs south from the Acton area into the heart of the mountains and links up with the Angeles Crest Highway. It is a beautiful drive with big canyon views.

Angeles Crest Highway

The Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) winds across the San Gabriels with turnouts, picnic areas, and trailheads. It is one of the best mountain drives in Southern California. Check for closures before you go, since snow and storms can close sections.

Things to do in the forest

  • Hike to viewpoints and waterfalls.
  • Visit the Mount Wilson Observatory area, known for its history in astronomy.
  • Picnic in the pines in summer, when the high country is cooler than the valleys.
  • Look for snow in winter at higher elevations.

Many areas need a parking pass. Check the U.S. Forest Service website for current pass rules, fire restrictions, and closures.

Stargazing near Acton

You do not even have to leave the resort for this one. Acton is far from the brightest city lights. On clear nights, guests enjoy the stars right from their sites.

Fire safety

Fire is a serious risk in Southern California's mountains, especially in summer and fall. Follow all forest fire rules. At the resort, only propane grills are allowed. Charcoal grills and open wood fires are not permitted.

Where to stay

The Californian RV Resort has full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, complimentary Wi-Fi, a laundry room, an exercise room, and a seasonal pool and hot tub. See the amenities page and our things to do near Acton page for more.

Nightly stays start at $80 per night and weekly stays start at $475. If the Angeles National Forest is on your list, book your site on Campspot or call the office at (661) 269-0919.
