Vasquez Rocks Camping and Day Trip Guide for RV Travelers
Famous sandstone rocks, easy trails, and film history, just minutes from the resort.
If you are searching for Vasquez Rocks camping, you have probably seen the photos. Huge slabs of sandstone tilt up out of the ground at sharp angles. They look like another planet. In fact, they have stood in for other planets on screen many times.
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area is in Agua Dulce, just minutes from The Californian RV Resort in Acton. Here is how to plan your visit, and where to stay with full hookups.
What Vasquez Rocks is
Vasquez Rocks Natural Area is a Los Angeles County park in the Sierra Pelona foothills. The rocks formed over millions of years as layers of sandstone were pushed up and tilted by movement along nearby faults.
The park is named after Tiburcio Vasquez, a 19th-century bandit who is said to have used the rocks as a hideout. Long before that, the area was home to the Tataviam people.
Film and TV history
Vasquez Rocks is one of the most filmed landscapes in Southern California. It has appeared in westerns, sci-fi shows, commercials, and music videos. Star Trek fans will know it well. Many visitors come just to stand where a famous scene was shot.
Camping at Vasquez Rocks vs staying nearby
Vasquez Rocks is mainly a day-use park. Overnight use is limited, and it is not set up for RVs that need hookups. That is why many RV travelers stay nearby and visit for the day.
The Californian RV Resort is a short drive away in Acton. You get full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, complimentary Wi-Fi, and quiet nights. Then you can drive over to the rocks in your tow car or second vehicle whenever you like.
What to do at Vasquez Rocks
Hike the trails
The park has several easy to moderate trails. Most are short and good for families. A section of the Pacific Crest Trail also runs through the park.
Scramble the rocks
Many visitors climb on the lower rocks. Wear shoes with good grip and stay within your comfort zone. The rocks can be slick and steep.
Visit the interpretive center
The park has an interpretive center with exhibits on local history, wildlife, and geology. Check the county parks website for current hours.
When to visit
Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Winter days can be cool and clear. Summer gets hot, so go early in the morning and bring plenty of water. There is little shade on most trails.
