Full Hookup RV Parks: What 30 and 50 Amp Service Really Means

A plain guide to hookups, amps, and adapters, so you know what you are booking.

January 9, 2026 · RV Tips

When you search for full hookup RV parks, you see the same words over and over. Full hookups. 30 amp. 50 amp. If you are new to RVing, those terms can be confusing. If you have been at it a while, you know getting them wrong can ruin a night.

This guide explains what full hookups mean, how 30 and 50 amp service differ, and what to check before you book any site.

What full hookups mean

A full hookup site gives you three connections:

  • Water: a fresh water spigot for your hose
  • Sewer: a sewer connection for your gray and black tanks
  • Electric: a power pedestal with one or more outlets

With all three, you do not need to run your generator or drive to a dump station. You can stay as long as you like without managing tank levels every day. Partial hookup sites usually have water and electric only.

30 amp vs 50 amp service

The amp rating tells you how much power your RV can draw at once.

30 amp service

A 30 amp plug has three prongs. It is common on smaller travel trailers, many Class C motorhomes, and older rigs. It gives you enough power for an air conditioner and a few small appliances at the same time. Run too much at once and you will trip the breaker.

50 amp service

A 50 amp plug has four prongs. It is common on large fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes. Many of those rigs have two air conditioners, and 50 amp service gives you far more power to run them along with other appliances.

Adapters

You can use an adapter (often called a dogbone) to plug a 30 amp RV into a 50 amp outlet, or the other way around. If you plug a 50 amp rig into a 30 amp outlet, you are limited to 30 amps. You will need to be careful about what you run.

What to check before you book

Before you book any site, confirm these details:

  • Does the site have water, sewer, and electric, or only some?
  • Is 30 or 50 amp service available, or both?
  • How long and wide are the sites?
  • Is propane available on site?
  • Is Wi-Fi included?

A quick call to the park office can save you a long night.

Good habits on any full hookup site

  • Use a surge protector. It helps guard your RV from power problems.
  • Keep your black tank valve closed until it is time to dump, so solids do not build up.
  • Use a water pressure regulator on your hose.
  • Bring a sewer hose support so the line drains well.

These small habits protect your rig and make every stop easier.
