Winter RV Camping in Southern California: A Guide to Acton at 3,000 Feet

Mild days, cold nights, and a few simple habits that keep your rig happy all winter.

December 23, 2025 · Seasonal

Winter RV camping in Southern California is one of the best deals in RV travel. Days are often sunny and mild. Crowds thin out. And you can still reach the beach, the city, and the mountains in a single trip.

But not every part of Southern California has the same winter. The Californian RV Resort sits at about 3,000 feet in Acton. That height brings clean air and big views. It also brings cooler nights than you get down on the coast. Here is what to expect and how to prepare.

What winter feels like in Acton

Acton is in the high desert foothills of northern Los Angeles County. Winter days are usually cool to mild and often clear. Nights are a different story. Temperatures can drop near or below freezing on some winter nights, and the wind can pick up.

Rain comes in short storms, and now and then the nearby peaks get a dusting of snow. Most days, though, you will see blue sky and sharp mountain views. Many guests say winter is their favorite time to stay.

How to prep your RV for cold nights

A few simple habits keep your rig comfortable when the temperature drops.

Protect your water hose

A freezing night can damage an unprotected fresh water hose. Use a heated hose, or wrap your hose and connection with insulation. Some guests disconnect the hose on the coldest nights and use their onboard tank.

Keep propane topped off

Your furnace will run more in winter. Propane is available at the resort, so you do not need to haul tanks to town. Check your levels before a cold front moves in.

Use your 30 or 50 amp service wisely

Every site has full hookups with 30 and 50 amp electric service. A small electric heater can take some load off your furnace. Just do not run too many big appliances at once, or you may trip a breaker.

Watch the wind

Bring in awnings and loose gear when the wind kicks up. It is a good habit in any RV park, and it matters more in the foothills.

Winter day trips from Acton

Winter is a great time to explore without summer heat. A few ideas:

  • Vasquez Rocks Natural Area in Agua Dulce, a short drive away, is comfortable for hiking on cool, clear days.
  • Universal Studios Hollywood is about 35 minutes away without heavy traffic, and lines are often shorter outside the holidays.
  • The beaches at Venice, Malibu, and Ventura stay mild in winter and make a nice change of scene.
  • The Angeles National Forest sits right next to Acton. Check road and weather conditions before you go, because some mountain roads close after snow.
